Seven haikus for winter by Matsuo Bashō

Seven haikus for winter

The season’s first snow
Dumped on a daffodil leaf
— Bending, it bows.

Winter solitude —
In a world of one color
The sound of wind.

Winter garden,
The moon thinned to a thread,
Insects singing.

Waking in the night;
The lamp is low,
The oil freezing.

The snow is pretty
Some children make snow angels,
As some fall asleep

First snow of the year
What happiness to be here
In my own small hut

You make the fire
And I’ll show you something wonderful:
A big ball of snow!
